How to Get Around Santorini: Bus, Taxi, Car Rental or Private Transfer
Figuring out how to get around Santorini is the part of the trip most visitors underestimate. The island looks tiny on the map and it is: Oia to Perissa is 25 kilometres. But the caldera villages sit on top of a cliff, the beaches are on the other side of the island, the roads are narrow and the number of taxis is famously small. In peak season the transport question decides whether you spend your holiday at viewpoints or in queues. This guide compares every option honestly, with prices, so you can pick the right mix. The layout of Santorini in one minute
Think of the island as a crescent. Along the inner edge of the crescent, on the caldera cliff, are the famous villages: Oia at the northern tip, then Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira (the capital) in the middle, and Akrotiri at the southern tip. On the outer, eastern side, at sea level, are the airport and the beach resorts: Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos. Athinios, the ferry port, is on the caldera side below Megalochori, connected to the top by a steep zigzag road. Pyrgos and Megalochori are inland villages in the middle.
Distances are short but roads are slow. Fira to Oia takes 20 to 30 minutes by car outside the sunset rush and 45 minutes in it. The airport to Fira is 15 minutes. Athinios port to Fira is 20 minutes once you are up the zigzag.
KTEL buses: cheap, slow, all roads lead to Fira
Santorini has one bus company, KTEL, and one bus station, in the centre of Fira. Every route starts and ends there: Fira to Oia, Fira to the airport, Fira to Athinios port, Fira to Kamari, Fira to Perissa and Perivolos, Fira to Akrotiri and Red Beach. Tickets cost around 2 euros and are bought on board. Buses run roughly every 20 to 30 minutes on the busy routes in summer and much less often in winter.
The catch is the change. Staying in Oia and going to Perissa beach means a bus to Fira, a wait, and a second bus, easily 90 minutes each way. In July and August the buses from the airport and the port fill up and leave people behind, and the last buses in the evening run early. The bus is excellent for a day trip from Fira to one beach, and poor for anything involving luggage, a timetable or a late dinner.
Taxis: good when you can find one
The island's taxi fleet is tiny for the number of visitors, and in summer that is the whole story. There is a taxi rank in Fira and one at the airport and port, and there is no reliable way to hail a taxi on the street elsewhere. Fares are metered on paper but many drivers quote a flat price. Expect around 20 euros from the airport to Fira, 25 to 30 euros from Athinios port to Fira, and 35 to 45 euros between Fira and Oia, more at night or with luggage.
Taxis work for a short hop when you happen to be at a rank. They do not work for arrival days in peak season, when the queue at the airport or port can be 30 to 60 minutes, or for getting back from Oia after sunset, when hundreds of people want the same handful of cars.
Uber and taxi apps
Uber operates in Santorini only as Uber Taxi, meaning the app requests one of the same local taxis at meter rates. When the taxis are busy, the app shows no cars. There is no Uber X, Bolt or FreeNow fleet with private drivers. Treat the apps as a slightly easier way to reach the taxi rank, not as a separate supply of vehicles.
Car, scooter and ATV rental
Renting is popular and for good reason: it is the only way to reach the quieter beaches like Vlychada and Vourvoulos or the lighthouse at Akrotiri on your own schedule. A small car costs from around 40 to 60 euros a day in summer and ATVs from around 30 euros, plus fuel.
The downsides are real. Parking in Oia and Fira is very limited and in the afternoon you may park a 15 minute walk away. The caldera road is narrow with steep drops, ATVs are involved in a high share of the island's accidents, and Greek drink driving limits are low, which matters on an island whose main afternoon activity is wine tasting. Rent a car for the beach days in the middle of your stay, and use a transfer for arrivals, departures and evenings.
The Fira cable car, donkeys and the caldera path
The cable car links the Old Port below Fira with the town in about 3 minutes and is mainly used by cruise passengers arriving by tender. Tickets are a few euros each way. On busy cruise days the queue can reach an hour; the alternatives are walking the 588 steps (30 minutes up, in the heat, sharing the path with donkeys) or, for larger groups, a water taxi to Athinios port where a driver can meet you. The caldera path from Fira to Oia is a 10 kilometre walk of 3 to 4 hours through Firostefani and Imerovigli. It is one of the best things to do on the island. Do it in the morning and book a transfer back from Oia.
Private transfers: what they cost and when they make sense
A private transfer is a pre-booked car or minivan with a driver, at a fixed price per vehicle. With Magic South the price starts from 35 euros for up to 3 passengers in a BMW X1 and from 50 euros for up to 8 passengers in a Mercedes Vito, with larger Sprinter minibuses for 12 and 20 people. The driver waits at arrivals or on the quay with your name, follows your flight or ferry if it is late, and takes you door to door with the luggage.
For 1 or 2 people making one short trip, a taxi is cheaper if you can get one. For 3 or more people, for anything with luggage, and for any journey on a peak season arrival day, the private transfer is usually the same price as a taxi and removes the queue.
